Surfers – Learn More About Ocean Swells
What makes San Diego waves so great to surf? Have you wondered why San Diego has such great surfing summer swells every year? The origin of the swell is in the winter storms of the Southern Hemisphere, some in the Indian Ocean, halfway around the earth. The world-reknown and local Scripps Institute for Oceanography presents, “Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture: Where the Swell Begins,” given by SIO’s professor emeritus of geophysics, Dr. Walter Munk. Join internationally renowned Scripps professor Walter Munk to learn how World War II and his measurements of the swells at Guadalupe Island in Mexico led to this discovery and what it means for surfers today.
