A lot of Americans share something in common in regards to the effects of the economy. As a result of this economy and its setbacks there has been an increase in stress and anxiety due to financial issues people have suffered. The American Psychological Association (APA) has done studies in which they have shown adults reporting an increase in stress. They have reported that the economy is still one of the most important sources for stress. So what are we to do about America’s well-being?

The Gallup also keeps track of what is called the Well Being Index (WBI). The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index is the first-ever daily assessment of U.S. residents’ health and well-being. By interviewing at least 1,000 U.S. adults every day, the Well-Being Index provides real-time measurement and insights needed to improve health, increase productivity, and lower healthcare costs. Public and private sector leaders use data on life evaluation, physical health, emotional health, healthy behavior, work environment, and basic access to develop and prioritize strategies to help their communities thrive and grow. This type of information is very important to us because it keeps us informed where we stand as a nation in regards to the effects of what we are experiencing in our economy and country.

When you observe the graphs on the site they reflect that during this year Americans have reported higher well-being during the spring and summer months. There has been a steady decline in well-being during the fall and winter. This could also be related to the fact that the holidays are here and that is definitely a stressful time of year. Also, within the fall and winter months the days end earlier and there is more darkness which might attribute as well.

People are experiencing more anxiety and depression.  What are we choosing to do about it? There has been a significant increase in the amount of people seeking alternative ways to ensure their well-being. Studies have shown that the use of cannabis reduces anxiety. There has been an increase in the use of cannabis medicinally. A lot of Americans are becoming more open minded to the idea of alternative medications and more receptive of the negative effects prescription medication. There is more of an interest to become educated about our health and well-being.

Kava is a natural herb that is used to promote a state of mental and physical relaxation. Panax Ginseng has been used since ancient times and it supports mental as well as physical performance. It also helps the body adapt to the impact of stress. Passion flower reduces the symptoms of anxiety, and Valerian is also an herbal anxiety supplement. All of these herbs can be taken in pill form as a supplement; they’re also available in herbal liquid form and can be also consumed in tea form.

I think it is very important to inform the public of the options we have to go the ‘alternative’ route. I know that there are people who are dubious to alternative health, but the idea here is just to be informative. If we can inform as many people as possible, we are giving others the power to make a decision between traditional and alternative. Now that there is substantial research behind alternative methods, I hope this can persuade Americans to be open to alternative health. If we focus on positive ways to improve America’s well-being we will be on our way to where we want to be!
